Or, it could be a blessing in disguise.

Let’s dive into a couple of assets that have shown face recently, both players mighty quiet throughout the season. Neither of the following players are going to save the season for the Kings, but their recent output (if you really call it that) spotlights where this club is really hurting.

Want that big-name, proven talent top-6 type of forward to make way to Los Angeles via another Dean Lombardi deal? That’s the attractive option, there’s another way to look at it.

Kyle Clifford and Trevor Lewis have both been showing more than just hard work and dependable presence as of late, they’ve been hitting the score sheet. With the boost in play the Kings’ 4th line has seen since Darryl Sutter‘s arrival, this needed to happen sooner than later.

.

.

Kyle Clifford has 9 points this season, he’s recorded a point or greater in 7 games this year. The Kings are 6-1-0 in those contests. Trevor Lewis has 3 points this season, he’s recorded a point in 3 separate games. The Kings are 2-0-1 when Lewis chips in. That makes the Kings 8-1-1 when these two 4th-liners ink the score sheet. These moments haven’t been just a personal boost for Clifford and Lewis, but to the Kings and their biggest problem this year – scoring. In Clifford’s 7 games with a point, the Kings have totaled 24 goals, a 3.43 goals-per average. In Lewis’ 3 games with a point, the Kings have totaled 14 goals, a 4.67 goals-per average.

Those medians are a far cry from the club’s lowly average of 2.13 goals per game this season, which sits dead last in the NHL.

This really shows what production from a 3rd or 4th line can do to a club, it has an effect on the big-name role players, alleviates some pressure. The stats, even though I’m not a numbers guy, avidly agree.

I’m a bit thrown off when it comes to hunting down a big-name on the market come the trade-deadline. The Kings have the firepower, the frustration has been it’s extreme lack in output. What has made it even more frustrating? When that top-6 firepower doesn’t do the job, no one’s going to do it – as such with the Kings this year. If the Kings are to deal before February 27th, it should be a couple of under the radar moves to solidify the 3rd and 4th lines.

Really, it should take nothing for the Jonathan Bernier trade activists to get excited about, there’s no blockbuster solution this year. For the Kings and Dean Lombardi, it may be another move similar to two years ago, roping in Jeff Halpern and Fredrik Modin – but not quite that cheap. The trade may be as boring as watching this team, but it’s one that will suit the Kings much better in the long run.

To be honest, it wouldn’t be an invalid argument to claim the Kings are a fresh 3rd and/or 4th liner away from finally hitting a stride this year.

Deals aside, Kyle Clifford has been heckling defensive zones since Darryl Sutter‘s arrival, notching 20 shots in 17 games. Only 7 less than he had in his first 33 appearances.

Sh*t starts looking like a mental ward when it gets this good

But, the Kings would not go quietly into the night. They got goals from Simmonds, Clifford and…wait for it: Dustin Penner in a 3-1 win in the Shark Tank. Jonathan Quick made 51 saves in a stellar performance. Icing on the cake: Dennis Bernstein of The 4th Period guest hosts the show!

Jarret Stoll was suspended, Anze Kopitar was still injured. There was no way the LA Kings win Game 2 in San Jose…right? Not a chance. The team collectively stepped up and shut out the San Jose Sharks at home. Jack Johnson and Drew Doughty got the defense scoring. Quick made some great stops. Kyle Clifford showed some heart with a nice goal. So, we get a Game 5. Do we get a Game 6?

Keep that remote control idle, Chris and Keith are coming at you with the recap to tonight’s glorious victory with Episode 102 of Overtime. Stay on that couch.

- – -

I was harping on conservative defensive play tonight, and boy was I wrong. But really, can you blame that mindset? The Kings’ powerplay has come out of nowhere and has suddenly become the storyline of the series. Jack Johnson with two points, and Drew Doughty doubling the pleasure riding the four-wheeler.

Jack and Drew, I sure don’t mind it, do you?

DIRECT DEPOSIT

The one aspect that has proved to be a struggle throughout the year for the Kings has become the most domineering factor for the club’s offensive production in the playoffs. Save yourself the trip to Downtown, Los Angeles for the weekly ‘Art Walk’ and watch video of the Kings’ powerplay in the first two games of the Western Conference Quarterfinals. Vincent van Gogh has got to be rolling over in his grave. Remarkable puck movement, astounding control and use of space in the offensive zone, and executing on open lanes for shots. No hesitation, and utilizing opportunity to stretch the twine in San Jose. Folks, we’ve got a roster that can win this series.

- – -

Quick Satisfaction

You can’t ask much more from a goaltender than what Jonathan Quick has provided for this team in the first two games of the series. Although a loss in the opening contest, Quick maintained poise and posture after surrendering an early goal to keep the Kings in the game. You can’t pin Joe Pavelski‘s OT winner on Quick, there’s nothing you can do to defend a shot like Pavelski unloaded on a smooth transition odd-man rush off of an offensive zone turnover. Not only does the guy regroup from such a heartbreaking finish, but he epitomizes a brick-wall and silences the Shark-Tank with a shutout. The HP Pavilion was quieter than a college library during finals week, and boy was it a beautiful thing.

- – -

And for Dessert, Kyle Frank Clifford

I’ll take another goal, please. Your chocolate cake tastes like shit.

- – -

The White Hem-Lines Survive Another Day

My cult-like addiction to hockey uniforms took another step forward tonight. If the Kings were to get swept in the series, tonight’s contest would be the final installment of the current road uniforms. Well, you can stamp a ticket back to San Jose, and throw those white hem-lines in the washing machine. They’ll need something to wear for Game 5, and these beauty’s are what the closet will be calling for. Fashion show.

A sad day it was for the Los Angeles Kings community. Tanner Raboin, an avid fan, passed away this morning from his lengthy battle with Chronic Granulomotous Disorder. My thoughts and prayers are with the Raboin family, who have been a fixture among Kings fans since the mid-1980′s. It is only due respect to take a moment and grieve such a sorrowful loss. Here’s to the Kings making an honest push for the Stanley Cup in honor of Tanner Raboin. To get the full, in-depth story on Tanner, head over to Mayors Manor. R.I.P.

- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -

There’s no easy way to transition to basic news, but there were some promising looks today in El Segundo at this morning’s practice. The Kings, who are just three days away from the Western Conference Quarterfinals against the San Jose Sharks, may not head into the Shark-Tank on Thursday night as short-handed as initially thought.

Looks like Alexei Ponikarovsky is giving Kyle Clifford a hard-time about the shiner that’s warped his left-eye. Funny thing is, that internal bleeding is probably better at maintaining puck possession in the corners than you, Alexei.

It may have more points, too.

- – -

Just-in Time?

Justin Williams seems to be recovering from his shoulder injury at quite the pace. Suffering a separated shoulder on March 21st against the Calgary Flames, Williams was tabbed to miss up to six weeks. However, it is possible to see Williams on Thursday night in the postseason opener. On the ice today, Williams took part in contact drills, which is as good of a sign as you’re going to get from a victim of a separated shoulder. Talk about what would be a crucial return, Williams allotted 57 points with 22 goals and 35 assists before the injury. Even if not at 100% the Kings will gladly take what they can get, as the depth of the roster has seen a steep decline in talent since the recent string of injuries. Williams, who returned to the roster late last season after missing three-plus months to a broken leg, was a complete non-factor in the playoffs. The difference this time around, Williams has missed just about three weeks, and has been able to continue his lower-body conditioning. Further analysis will feed a stronger memo from the Kings tomorrow regarding Williams’ status. By the looks of it, I’d expect to see Justin Williams in the first-round, but not necessarily in the first game.

Who?

Things are also looking good for Scott Parse, who has played in just five games this season. Parse has been hampered by a hip injury he suffered in August during training camp. After more than a month of rehab, Parse attempted a return in early November that was cut short after five games. His short-stint was quite impressive, etching his name onto the score-sheet four times with a goal and three assists. Unfortunately, his ailing hip called the party. After a successful surgery and five months of rehabilitation, it looks as though Parse may be yet another last-minute addition to the Kings’ playoff roster. However, I can’t see Parse’s return more likely than that of Williams. Not only has he been out since mid-November, but his strength and conditioning has been idle. Just as important as the surgery itself is the strengthening of the muscles and tendons that support the affected area. Is it worth it for the Kings to bring back Parse at this point, or is four more months of rest and conditioning the smarter tactic for the long-term? Needless to say, if he’s cleared and willing to go, hop on board at-will, Scott.

I don’t expect imminent change regarding Kevin Westgarth‘s position on our active roster. It would be a different story if the Kings’ were desperate to find open spots. Not the case. So, why am I bothering to touch on this? He hasn’t done anything. Really, he’s yet to even drop the mits. The enforcer role that factored into Westgarth making the team out of training camp has been nonexistent. The other enticing aspect of having the Princeton alum on the Kings’ roster was his respectable offensive output last year with the Manchester Monarchs. His contributions to the Kings’ offense this season? Snag your thesaurus for synonyms under ‘nonexistent’. The enforcer types of the old NHL are flirting with extinction. With the league’s recent evolution keying on speed and skill, teams can’t afford to ice 4th line players solely for intimidation. You need a player that boosts a 3rd or 4th line both physically and offensively. He’s failed in both roles. Already with four years of experience in the AHL, is more time in the minors a viable solution anymore? I’m not sure, my gut says no.

This is where Kyle Clifford joins the picture. He’s a better fit for the 4th line enforcer role. He’s got the physical dimension to go along with an offensive skill-set that has deemed much better this season than Westgarth’s. Clifford, more so than Brayden Schenn, is better off staying with the Kings this year. His style of play is begging for more immediate NHL experience, whereas Schenn still needs to utilize the WHL to polish the flashes of brilliance he’s shown this season. He needs to learn how to finish.

Kyle Clifford won’t take Kevin Westgarth‘s role by way of a roster move this year. He’ll have to do it throughout the course of the season with his play rather than Westgarth’s miscues. Westgarth needs to become a satisfying asset, and soon. More important than his fighting is his presence to the Kings’ offensive game. He’s got one shot on goal in ten games, and is doing nothing spectacular on the other end of the ice with a -4 rating. He has shown an inability to adapt to the NHL, and Clifford may enhance that weakness. If Kyle Clifford does remain with the Kings, which signs are pointing to since he’s dressing tonight, he’s going to get ice time. You don’t keep a prospect with the big club to be a healthy scratch. Ice time isn’t a problem for Clifford in the OHL, development is.

Beside the final score tonight in Calgary, is there much else to view in a negative fashion about the first two games? I’m finding it easier to look past tonight’s loss since it’s so early, and since the Kings have impressed in almost every aspect. How stellar has the defense been? Beside a couple of miscues, of course. Those top two pairings couldn’t be better, and Jake Muzzin has been a pleasant addition out of training camp. You couldn’t have asked much more out of the new tandem of goalies Jonathan Quick and Jonathan Bernier. This has all intentions of the Kings putting together one of the lowest ‘goals allowed’ stat lines in the league. As for the offense, they haven’t been bad. Facing a Stanley Cup Favorite in the Vancouver Canucks, the Kings did everything but finish. Facing an expected Playoff team in the Calgary Flames, the Kings faced an angry defense coming off of an embarrassment in Edmonton, blocking a barrage of shots and exposing the Kings to working the outside all night. You’d be stubborn to not have to be pleased with the play the Kings are bringing home Tuesday night. Below I’ve got thoughts on the weekend trip to Canada, and what to look forward to Tuesday night.

Sweet Revenge: Man oh man. Not only were the Kings able to beat the team that eliminated them from the playoffs last year, but for you fellow USA Hockey fans, Jack Johnson sealed the win beating Roberto Luongo off the left post. Nothing like aiding pent-up frustration and sorrow from last year’s Winter Olympics and NHL Playoffs on one wrist-shot. How Sweet it is!

The Jonathan’s Impress: Our first look at the Jonathan Quick – Jonathan Bernier duo was awesome. Allowing a total of 3 goals on 55 shots in the two games combined is excellent. Both goalies were able to keep a Kings offense, which struggled to finish scoring opportunities, in both games. Jonathan Quick stabilized his label as the #1 goalie, and Jonathan Bernier did nothing but continue to exploit himself as a highly touted prospect. Quick stood on his head, plain and simple. The only goal Quick surrendered was due to Alexander Edler‘s presence in front of the net on a powerplay. Edler attracted Kings wingers to the top of the slot, and lost the interest of Kings defensemen to find an opening that left Quick hanging dry. Bernier played well, 29 saves against a playoff-caliber lineup. Bernier got beat on the penalty-kill by Curtis Glencross off of a turnover. Don’t blame Jack Johnson here, Anze Kopitar needs to shovel that puck into the corner. Craig Conroy, however, set the tone in what would ultimately result in a loss with a wrister from 15-20 feet out. Weak goal, but Bernier did have a couple of saves thereafter to keep it close. Jonathan Quick faces a highly underrated young Atlanta Thrashers offense on Tuesday night.

How About Those Rookies?: Brayden Schenn is already wearing out his name with broadcasters, having a big impact on our offensive zone presence on Saturday night, just missing on two scoring chances. Schenn was solid in the offensive zone tonight as well, just missing on another scoring opportunity. Really, Schenn is just inches away from having 2 or 3 goals. Kyle Clifford has shown promise as well, as that fourth line has gained early trust from Terry Murray, seeing ice time late in both games. Kevin Westgarth, the partner to those two on the fourth line has been alright. Nothing great, physical play, no fights, and a bad defensive zone turnover in Vancouver.

Where have the goals been?: The Kings haven’t been able to score, tallying just two goals in regulation this weekend. They’ve had little presence in front of the net, and when they have scored, that’s where they’ve been. The Kings have been forced to take a lot of wide shots with no rebound threat. The Canucks and Flames put a lot of pressure on Kings pointmen and cycling ability. Don’t make assumptions just yet, this offense was a break or two away from exploding this weekend.
Speaking of offense, here comes Atlanta: If you’re wondering what to look out for from the Thrashers on Tuesday, it’s their young offense. Atlanta, through trades and high draft picks, has developed a bright future. Forwards Evander Kane and Niclas Bergfors are just two key pieces to what could be an offensive force in two years. Yet another good test for our defense, and expect the Kings to face journeyman Chris Mason in goal for Atlanta. Here’s to wishing the best to Ondrej Pavelec in his recovery from his sudden collapse during Atlanta’s opener, the cause of which has yet to be determined. The Thrashers are coming off of a 5-3 loss to Southeast Division rival Tampa Bay Lightning, but opened eyes in Georgia with a shocking 4-2 win against Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals. You could argue that the Thrashers are where the Kings were two years ago. Thrashers’ GM Rick Dudley seems to be taking a very similar approach to Kings GM Dean Lombardi. Dump older, short term talent for draft picks and prospects. And that’s what they have. Young talent, not enough experience. A franchise that was supposed to crumble after losing Ilya Kovalchuk is suddenly posing as a contender in the near future.

The Kings will stay on the West side, but head North for a rematch of last year’s Western Conference Quarterfinals against the Vancouver Canucks. This will undoubtedly be a good test, and a tough one at that for a Kings roster icing a couple of new veterans and a handful of fresh prospects. You couple the seething anticipation surrounding this year’s club with an opening night match-up against the team who eliminated us from the playoffs, and you better expect the Kings to come out hard. Don’t think for a minute that playing Vancouver doesn’t add a little more intensity to the lineup. The Kings are looking to start a crucial season as their development into an elite NHL club continues to drive, and it starts against the team who sent us packing last year. As Saturday night’s opener approaches, I’ve got some last minute thoughts below:

This year’s opener will be more successful than the last. Yes, you remember that debacle against Phoenix. It would be difficult to play worse than the Kings did in the opener last year. The hype surrounding that team was a bit premature. They were in Los Angeles against a comfortable Phoenix Coyotes opponent, and were expected to make the playoffs for the first time since 2002. Media and public relations piled on extraneous pressure and pumped up egos that needed to be tamed. Most players were affected by it, but each in their own way. Escorting the players into Staples Center like it was the freakin’ Grammys while completely exposing them to the public just two hours before the game had disaster written all over it. I was looking over my shoulder in hesitant anticipation for the players to jump on floats into a parade down Figueroa. Good fanfare, but added unnecessary distractions to the team. Expectations continue to skyrocket leading up to this year’s opener, which is why starting on the road is a good thing. Better to have distractions of opposing fans than too much hype. Extra pressure is often built in front of the home fans after a long summer, playing with clear heads against an important opponent is an attractive fit.

Turn back the clock. Not literally, we’ve got another month or so of evening daylight. However, the Kings will be rocking the retro gold and purple uniforms that were worn by the franchise from their inception in 1967 until 1988. The uniforms were tweaked a few times during that 21-year period, but nothing substantial. The jersey piping and number borders were the only subtle changes, and I’m not sure which specific set the Kings are going to unveil. The Vancouver Canucks are celebrating their 40-year anniversary this season, and both teams will be donning vintage sweaters for all four match-ups this year. Too bad they’re not celebrating 20 years, I’d rather see the 90′s silver and black.

Roster Finalized to 23 Players today. The Kings announced the set roster they’ll be working with to start the season. Most notable are the prospects who survived training camp. Forwards Andrei Loktionov, Kyle Clifford, Brayden Schenn, and Trevor Lewis will be competing for long-term spots, and defenseman Jake Muzzin will get time on the blue line. Scott Parse, who was tabbed as the favorite to take the second-line left wing spot, looks to be starting the season on injured reserve as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury. Look for one of these forwards to be assigned to Manchester once Parse returns, unless that player is Kyle Clifford, who is qualified to return to the Barrie Colts of the OHL unless he plays in 9 games for the Kings. The competition between Brayden Schenn and Andrei Lotkionov for a 4th line centerman spot should continue to play itself out. Not to say this year’s results have any long-term impact on the two, but could ultimately pinpoint which player is ready to have a solid impact this season.

Bernier’s Extension. Smart move by Dean Lombardi here, not to say it wasn’t expected. Jonathan Bernier, who was slated to become a Restricted Free Agent at season’s end, is now locked up for the next three years. Granted a two year extension through 2013, Bernier is now allotted plenty of time to continue his growth at the NHL level. The best part about Bernier’s extension is the buffer zone now provided to Jonathan Quick. This is long-term, and this is Quick’s season. To have both goaltenders signed for the next three seasons gives ample time to decide on a franchise goalie. Who knows? Maybe they’ll end up as a solid tandem and become a good rotation. They’re both just too good I think, no?

Many expect Clifford to make the team and be tough. But is there more there than just a tough guy?

EL SEGUNDO, CA — When the Los Angeles Kings selected left wing Kyle Clifford in the second round (35th overall) of the 2009 National Hockey League Entry Draft, it was because he was able to contribute offensively as well as play a tough, physical game and drop the gloves when needed.

The 6-2, 208-pound native of Ayr, Ontario scored just one goal with 14 assists for 15 points in 66 games in the 2007-08 season with the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League (his first season in the OHL) while racking up 83 penalty minutes.

Clifford improved in a big way after that, scoring 16 goals and adding twelve assists for 28 points with 133 penalty minutes in sixty games in 2008-09, and topping that in 2009-10 with 28 goals and 29 assists for 57 points with 111 penalty minutes.

Clifford’s play with the Colts last season earned him a call-up to the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League (Kings’ primary minor league affiliate) on an amateur tryout agreement for the AHL playoffs once the Colts’ season was over. But, as Clifford discovered, having a bit of a scoring touch in Canadian junior hockey does not necessarily translate to higher levels.

Indeed, Clifford failed to score in seven playoff games, although he did record two assists with twelve penalty minutes and even spent some time on the Monarchs’ top line with Kings’ forward prospects Andrei Loktionov and Justin Azevedo.

“I was able to play with a couple of skilled guys like that,” said Clifford. “I just stuck to my game, mixed it up a little bit, threw some checks and tried to make a little bit of room for them.”

Despite his efforts, the Monarchs were eliminated in the Eastern Conference Finals by the eventual Calder Cup Champion Hershey Bears.

“You have to fight for every inch, especially at that high level, Clifford stressed. “It was a great group of guys. We really showed well the whole playoff run there—we were the underdogs for most of it. I felt like we put in a great effort against the Hershey Bears. It was a little disappointing, the way it ended, but I thought we really pulled through.”

But this year with the Barrie Colts of the OHL, Clifford tallied 28 goals, 29 assists and 111 penalty minutes. It looks like the Kings have a hell of a prospect on their hands.

During Gann Matsuda of Frozen Royalty‘s time at development camp this weekend, he got a chance to visit some of the tougher new additions to the LA Kings prospect pool. This is some good insight into what is, right now, an area of opportunity for Los Angeles.

EL SEGUNDO, CA — The Los Angeles Kings 2009 Development Camp for their young prospects. which ended on July 12, was rather different from camps held in previous years for several reasons.

One was the fact that only three days of the week-long camp were open to the public and the media to allow the young players to better focus on the task at hand.

But another more striking reason was that compared to previous camps, there seemed to be a greater intensity during both the scrimmages and the practice sessions and much of that may have been due to the fact that the Kings have brought in a number of prospects who not only are capable of playing a physical brand of hockey, but their toughness and fierce, competitive nature extends into their psyche as well, something that has been somewhat lacking throughout the Kings’ system.

One such player is their first round pick (fifth overall) in the 2009 National Hockey League Entry Draft, Brayden Schenn, a wet-behind-the-ears seventeen-year-old center from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

“The one thing about this guy is that his number one attribute is his competitiveness,” Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi at the draft in Montreal on June 26. “He’s a playoff-type player. I know that’s what [Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian] Burke saw in him and that’s certainly what we liked about him.”

First up is Kyle Clifford. Drafted in the second round (35th overall) by the LA Kings, Clifford is a tough, 6’1″, 200 pound left wing playing for the Barrie Colts in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Clifford is a tough two-way forward who still shows up on the score sheet. In 60 games played for Barrie, Clifford at 16 goals and 12 assists for 28 points. Clifford also represented Team Canada at the Under-18 World Championships (another thing Lombardi loves is international play). The standout stat for Clifford is the 133 penalty minutes (ranking 19th in the OHL) he chalked up.

Clifford is a great example of what Lombardi looks for in the draft: character, toughness and defensive responsibility. In this article, Jim Barber said of Clifford:

“…he wants to pattern himself after Ottawa Senators feisty forward Mike Fisher, who is a punishing hitter, tenacious forechecker, great on the penalty kill, but who also has solid offensive credentials.”

In a recent interview with LAKings.com, Clifford said he patterned his style of play to that of gritty winger Milan Lucic of the Boston Bruins. The player that comes to mind when I see a bit more about Cliford is Wayne Simmonds. Clifford’s final final draft ranking was 182 (in all fairness others had him higher, even in the 1st round). However his toughness and character is a huge reason why Lombardi drafted him. Given the amount of time the Los Angeles Kings spend scouting their potential draft picks, it’s a safe bet that the pick of Kyle Clifford will pay off.

One glaring criticism of Clifford is his skating. According to International Scouting Services (ISS):

“Clifford is a straight ahead player with an edge. Skating is just OK – has heavy feet and needs to make sure he keeps his feet moving to get speed – skating has shown improvement over the season.”

The question for Kings fans would be: did we just draft yet another third liner? Given his statistics and scouting profile, it certainly appears so. While every Kings draftee will not end up playing for the team, there were quite a few other kids available who might have projected into our top six down the road. That said, drafting has been a strong suit for LA Kings GM Dean Lombardi. We might have a nice addition on our hands.

What do you think of the pick? Can Clifford be more than a third liner? Should we have picked Tomas Tartar who was still available?

LOS ANGELES — The National Hockey League completed its 2009 Entry Draft on Saturday in Montreal and just like on Friday, there were no major surprises from the Los Angeles Kings, who selected nine players in rounds 2-7 and were involved in four minor trades.

One of those trades sent center Brian Boyle (photo at left; courtesy Los Angeles Kings) to the New York Rangers in exchange for the Rangers’ third round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

In 28 games with the Kings this past season, the 24-year-old native of Hingham, Massachusetts scored four goals and added an assist with 42 penalty minutes. But he shuttled back and forth between Los Angeles and the Kings’ primary minor league affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League, where he scored ten goals and added eleven assists for 21 points with 73 penalty minutes in 42 games.
