Episode 39 – Maple Leaf’d

27 Jan, 2010 | by Keith

The Los Angeles Kings are on the road this week and playing very well of late. Keith and Chris break down the game against the Toronto Maple Leafs (with a guest video from a Leafs fan), give our thoughts on Gann Matsuda’s interview with Dean Lombardi and offer up a sacrifice to make the playoffs.

  • Apparently not, but he might make another move in the off-season.
  • Hmmm, the next time we play the Leafs - it might not be as easy to beat them.
  • No surprise that the Leafs played like a different team last night. They turned over half of their roster. Phaneuf had a rough season up to now but he is a top d-man in the league. Giggy has some gas left in the tank for sure and will be a nice stop-gap until The Monster (or someone else) takes it over.

My question remains: where's the offense? They're still slim. They'll win some games but they need some scoring.
  • I guess you could say that they're turning over a new leaf. (sheepish grin)

LOL, was that you in uniform Keith? I can't believe it, actually I thought it was a female, lol. I agree with you, the lines are looking pretty strong and they might start to play even better when they will have more games behind them.
Chris I know you have great expectation for Kopitar, but he's still improving, growing and learning. Give him another year or two. No hard feelings ok, I just don't like critics on him when he doesn't score, even from coach Murray. Anyway the Kings played great yesterday, especially Quick in first period and Kopitar. Unfortunately the post prevented him from scoring his third goal.

  • Another awesome one! I just subscribed to your channel. Looking forward to even more. I now challenge you to do a Brandon Segal tribute :-)
  • fernnando
its more easily than a purcell's tribute hahaha

has also told me to make a video of harrold, but this would need a help from Spielberg heheh

Thanks for subscribe my channel xD
  • On another note, does anyone else out there think that Blue Jackets' veteran Mike Commodore should be forced into wearing #64? I do...
  • LOL! I don't know why I had to read that twice to get it. You'd think he'd have a sense of humor about it. I think Miro Satan should wear #66. Embrace it!
  • Another great show guys! Keith, you look great in the Leafs "outfit" back in the day :-)
  • They say the clothes don't make the man. In this case they do :)
  • Gann
You sure about that, Keith? :-)
  • borutksvn
Hy guys, great work. Still no scoring from Kopitar Chris? I wouldn't be so hard on him.He has way more points than any other King and he played very good lately so...
Anyway keep up the good work C&K
    GO KINGS
  • Thanks for watching! Kopitar really has been re-ignited lately. The Richardson-Kopitar-Simmonds line has been so much fun to watch. There's a chemistry there I haven't seen since Smyth and Williams were playing on the line. I said it last night on the podcast and I'll say it again: Williams' energy has been missed until now. Brad Richardson is playing with that same energy.
  • Well, his scoring was pretty spotty in late December through up until this 4 game winning streak. The only reason I'm sometimes hard on him is that he is our top line center, we're building the team around him and I have high expectations. That being said, he's tearing it up again like he was to start the season. It's that top-line combo of players that's working out so well! So, I kinda eat my words on that statement...

Being a former employee of the LA Clippers disastrous franchise, the reference to that team was so true. They rarely have anything go right and never will in my mind until Sterling keels over or sells the team. as for my Kings, i really think that they have an opportunity to return home from this trip 4-1. the only team that should give them any kind of trouble will be the Devils. Columbus and the Bruins both have scoring issues and the Bluejackets have no goaltending. With our luck though, Garon will be put into net and shut us down. Either way, GO Kings!

anyone read the Helene Elliot column this morning. The Kings are defeinitly going to make a move either before or after the olympics. what kind of move remains to be seen, but i would really like to see Kovie in a Kings uniform. unfortunately, it sounds like the price is going to be steep. To steep for my liking. I am all for Ray Whitney or Ethan Moreau as a back up plan if Kovie becomes too expensive.

Finally, my props goes out to Gann. his article and interview with Deano was great. its not his fault that Deano called out JJ. his plus minus ratio clearly demonstatres that he is still a work in progress. JJ has to remember that he lost an entire season last year when he had to undergo shouder surgery. i feel that only hindered his development. he is defenitely better this year and his offensive talents are just finally starting to emerge. i would not be surprised to see if his plus minus rating is below double digits by the end of the season. Good luck in the olympics JJ

    Joe the collector out!
  • Joe, good point on Johnson's injury, that definitely hindered his development. Unfortunately, the same is happening with Hickey, but on a much bigger level.
  • Joe, I just don't get why Waddell won't let anyone talk to Ilya about a contract extension prior to the trade. How many teams will step back and not make an offer as a result of this? Kovalchuk as a pure rental is still worth a lot but a signed Kovalchuk gets you much, much more. Dumb move, in my opinion.

I'll tell you what, though, I would love Whitney (even though he's a bit small). Moreau would be nice too. I think Lombardi will find us a nice upgrade for us to sail into the playoffs with.
  • Souray please!
  • Thankfully for the Kings, Souray broke his hand over the weekend and might need surgery. Dodged that bullet ;)
  • Good call, nevermind then...
  • collector Joe
Souray huh? not sure he will fit into the Kings already full blueline. Even with his huge and powerful shot from the point. I personally think Souray is going to our cross town rivals, the Ducks. That is of course, if the Ducks can continue to make their push to the playoffs (something i am hoping for only because of the rivalry it will create between the two teams in southern cali)..if the Ducks become sellers, my guess for Souray is unknown
  • My only issue with Souray, Joe is that he isn't all that defensively responsible. I'd love him on our powerplay and we can afford his cap-hit. Does he fit into our system? Not sure but I'd definitely be happy if Lombardi went out and grabbed him.
  • "It's a disaster up there in Toronto" - That basically sums up everything.

Oh and by the way there is a "the" in the URL for The Hockey Card Show - http://thehockeycardshow.com

Cheers guys, good work as usual, see you in the playoffs.....eventually.

    Justin
    @hockeycardshow
  • Oops, sorry about that, Justin. We'll hit ya back next time! Stanley Cup series between the Kings & Leafs. Book it....for 2020.
  • You know what's NOT a disaster? Your show. The two of you are so fun to watch - you're like the Laurel & Hardy of hockey shows. And Dink, that "Muttley" / "Weezy" laugh of yours is as infectious as it is priceless!
  • fernnando
Great game yesterday, Brown played very well and Captain Canada made a pretty goal

My sacrifice? In Brazil, in King's home games i usually stay awake until 3.a.m. to be able to watch a game , and I have to go to university 7 a.m.

Hey guys, i made a video of Simmonds: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOZ7mopv50g
  • That is devotion Fernando! And I thought it was tough for Kings fans on the East Coast to watch!
  • You truly are a devoted Kings fan to stay up that late! Dustin Brown was awesome last night. Ron Wilson said today that he hopes Brownie plays that well in the Olympics.

Love the Simmonds video! Are you studying media production or something? You need work in trailers!
  • I enjoyed that video as well. He's my wife's favorite player, so I'll have to show her too. Nice work, Fernando. Why do I hear Abba in my head all of a sudden? LOL
  • fernnando
Thanks K9! I hope your wife like xD

Abba made a music for me!!

hahahah, not for me, for my name
  • fernnando
    Thanks Keith!

the videos that i made are for funny, i dont studying for it xD

    And Kovalchuk? He comes?
  • Nice job Fernando! And welcome back of course...
  • Gann
OK...I am now thoroughly embarrassed. Also, Facebook Connect doesn't seem to be working
  • Team Gann! T-shirts, beer mugs and watches sold separately! :)
